NYT on Square

There’s a credit-card swiping system called Square that’s really easy to use. People can buy a simple add-on to their iPhone, and start accepting credit cards.

But it still costs 2.75% + 15 cents for each transaction.

I guess that’s not a lot of money, but it’s weird to think about sending that much money outside of my community, to giant credit card corporations. Why would people shop at farmer’s markets if we didn’t care about where our money went?

This only occurred to me three days ago, because I am mostly a moron. I’m still not sure what I think about it.

David Pogue:

…the Square system is beautiful, simple and a joy to use. It saves money, red tape, worry and lost sales.

It sure is, and it sure does.

Here’s the thing: I know it’s awkward to approach your local soup cart, farmers’ market stand, or coffee drive-through and start selling them on the idea of accepting credit cards. But it would be better for you and better for them. Put on your best friendly-neighbor smile and show them Square. Then you’ll have no excuse not to shop local and stuff. Deal?
